A 53-year-old office worker in Takaishi, Osaka, sat at his computer and asked a generative AI to make him a badge. Out came the parking exemption permit given to drivers who have trouble walking.
In June he parked in Kita Ward, Osaka, and set the paper on his dashboard. The wording and the layout looked right.
A neighbor noticed that the same car never moved. Police checked. The registration number on the permit did exist, but the issue date and the expiry date did not match the record.
The man admitted it, saying he wanted to save on parking. On August 17 the police sent the case to prosecutors, the first AI forgery of this permit in the prefecture.
Then the police tried it themselves. They gave an AI the same instructions, and out came a permit carrying a real registration number.
A forger no longer needs any skill.
